Delhi NCR October Garden Checklist: 10 Things to Do Before Winter
October is a transition month for Delhi NCR gardens. The monsoon has tested your pots with humidity and heavy rain. Summer crops are beginning to slow down. And the winter growing season is arriving.
This is the month to reset the garden.
1. Empty the problem pots
Do not automatically carry every struggling summer plant into winter. Remove plants that are completely dead, severely diseased, beyond recovery or taking up space without producing. Keep healthy perennial plants and anything that can continue through the cooler months.
2. Check every drainage hole
Turn over your pots and make sure water can escape. Blocked drainage can lead to waterlogged soil, root problems, fungus and slow growth. Raise containers slightly where appropriate so the base is not sitting directly in pooled water.
3. Refresh tired potting mix
Old container media can become compacted over time. Loosen it and add suitable mature organic matter where needed. Do not treat every problem by simply adding fertilizer. First ask whether the roots have the right combination of air, moisture and growing space.
4. Measure sunlight
Observe where direct sunlight falls and for approximately how long. Make three zones if possible: low sun, medium sun and high sun. Then choose crops for each zone.
A plant that needs strong sun should not be forced into the darkest corner simply because you like how it looks there.
5. Start your winter greens
October is a good time to begin crops such as methi, palak, coriander and lettuce. Use wide containers and avoid crowding seedlings.
6. Start root vegetables in the right containers
Radish, carrot and beetroot need enough room below the soil. Do not use a tiny decorative pot just because it looks attractive. For root vegetables, container depth is part of the growing plan.
7. Plan support before peas and tomatoes need it
If a plant will climb or become top-heavy, install its support early. Trying to add a stake or trellis after the plant has become large can disturb roots and stems.
8. Inspect for pests
Look closely at new leaves, leaf undersides, stems, growing tips and the soil surface. Look for insects, sticky residue, holes, curling leaves or unusual spots. Early detection is much easier than trying to control a large infestation later.
9. Don't create a fixed watering routine
October weather can change quickly. Instead of saying “I water every day,” check soil moisture, pot size, sunlight, wind, plant type and recent rainfall. A balcony exposed to afternoon sun may dry faster than a shaded balcony nearby.
10. Make a small garden plan
Before buying more plants, write down: where is the sun, how many containers do I have, what do I actually want to eat, how much time can I spend caring for them, and which plants already need attention?
This five-minute exercise can save you from buying plants that never get the conditions they need.
Your October garden in one page
Clean → Drain → Refresh → Measure sunlight → Choose crops → Sow → Support → Inspect → Water carefully → Record
That is your October reset.
A winter garden does not need to be complicated. Six healthy containers are better than thirty neglected ones.
